United States Versus Bird Flu

Avian influenza, or bird flu as it is most commonly known, is a viral disease that has been ravishing Asia, as well as other countries, for more than two years now. Some choose to ignore the threat, but most health experts agree what we see now in the Eastern Hemisphere could be witnessed soon all across the world. Since the first outbreaks of bird flu recorded in late 2003, there have been more than 140 deaths world wide and entire poultry populations decimated. Some estimates claim a flu pandemic (world wide epidemic) could infect hundreds of millions and cause major social disruption.

With these worries in mind, the United States have closely followed the situation and with general fears that the disease could spread to their territory as well, federal and local authorities have been handed over a plan to prevent and be ready to deal with a possible avian influenza outbreak in the country. It is not clear if and when this will happen, but one can look to previous experiences and other events for clues as to how serious the threat really is for the American country.

Recent violent outbreaks in places such as Indonesia, which is now the world’s most heavily hit country, counting 47 human victims, are now followed by discoveries of low pathogenic bird flu viruses in some spots in U.S. The first one to raise fears was the case of two wild swans living on a lake in the state of Michigan. Routine tests found traces of a mild form of bird flu virus on the birds. The announcement was made by a White House spokesman, with details being given afterwards by officials from the Agriculture and Interior Departments. While the news was given high importance, experts claim there is no reason for concern, as the virus in question is in no way related to the Asian form and is no threat to humans. More recently, wild mallard ducks from Queen Anne’s County, Maryland, were found to carry the same pathogenic agent. The same reassurances were given by U.S. officials and although some people see this as a preview for possible bird flu outbreaks, health experts say mild and low pathogenic strains of avian influenza such as this one are common in the United States, as well as other countries. Since 1975, the low pathogenic strain of the H5N1 virus (the highly pathogenic form of which is causing high mortality in Asia) has been found on six other occasions on U.S. soil.

However, claims from other researchers warn that a more aggressive form of the disease could come to the American continent as early as this fall. Indeed, summer is a rather quiet period for the virus and the large number of cases in Asia during this time is due to the virus residing there for a long period of time. Come fall, large populations of wild fowl will cover thousands of miles on regular migratory paths. These birds are the natural carriers of the virus and are also quite resistant to it. Thus, they can carry the disease for great distances, without falling ill or succumbing to the disease and showing any signs of an infection. One particular reason for concern is the Alaskan territory. Its vicinity to the Asian continent makes it one of the possible points of entry for the disease. It is also a meeting place for water fowl, as wild birds from both Asia and America choose it as a feeding and nesting environment during the summer months. U.S. authorities have implemented a plan for the summer of 2006 which included the testing of more than 15,000 birds from 27 species in the region.

The program was extended to a nationwide level as you can read on www.bird-flu-center.com, as surveillance and constant testing is seen as an effective method of preparing for a possible outbreak of the disease. Biologists are set to test tens of thousands of birds. Locally, individual counties have also prepared pandemic plans and are carrying out drills for a worst case scenario. Hospitals are setting up special units for avian influenza patients, while schools and university campuses are also preparing. In the case of a pandemic, social disruption might force such institutions to close down, as they would be a suitable environment for the virus to spread. Another prevention measure used is banning poultry and poultry products imports from countries where avian flu has been found.

Although it is widely believed that some form of bird flu epidemic will eventually occur, there are those that play down the warnings. However, countries around the world choose to play the safety card and take prevention measures. Grim estimates say that if a pandemic occurs, it will kill 1.7 million Americans in the first year alone, as a vaccine takes months to produce after the start of an epidemic. On the other hand, we can still hope the disease will be contained and dealt with before before such an outcome is reached. It is, in the end, just a matter of wait and see.

George Velicu is the senior editor at www.bird-flu-center.com http://www.bird-flu-center.com and the man responsible for making the website one of the most comprehensive sources for avian influenza information on the Internet. He is also the one keeping a daily record of bird flu’s developments.

Travel, More Than The Home Court, Is The Key Factor In NBA Betting

With the exception of talent, when it comes to NBA betting, the most important factor to consider is the home court, right?

Well, not exactly.

Actually, there’s not much difference in courts. They’re all made of wood and while the court logos are of varying colors, designs and questionable tastes, all have a 10-foot basket at each end. Supposedly, there’s some advantage to knowing the rims but since metal mostly comes into play on missed shots and no one deliberately tries to miss, it’s difficult to see where the advantage lies. Yes, we know from a rudimentary 10th grade course in physics that longer shots produce longer rebounds but the direction of the carom is based more on the trajectory of the shot than anything to do with the condition of the rims.

Another supposed advantage of the home court is the local fans. But it’s hard to accept the notion that professionals, who balk at signing autographs unless they’re paid, are motivated by the very same people they so willingly shun. Besides, what did all that ranting and raving by Spike Lee at Madison Square Garden ever do for New York? Reggie Miller still did the right thing by the Pacers and destroyed the Knicks.

The final alleged advantage of playing at home is that players gain some sort of comfort level from sleeping in their own beds. Excuse me, but weren’t you paying attention to the Gold Club trial in Atlanta a few years ago? Based on the evidence, it seems that many a player readily would relinquish a night under his own satin sheets if an, ahem, dancer were made available for some companionship.

That being said, there is an advantage to playing at home but it has little to do with the court, the fans or the sleeping conditions. It has everything to do with getting to the court.

Clear and simple, visiting teams are disadvantaged most by travel, a factor we touched on but did not fully explore in a previous article. In fact, how far a team has to travel, how many time zones it crosses, the direction it travels and how many games it’s forced to play in a given number of nights are crucial elements in both NBA oddsmaking and NBA betting.

Remember how tired and out of synch you were after a cross Atlantic flight? Now try running six miles (the average distance a basketball player runs in a game) in a different venue, three out of four or four out of six nights and see how it impacts your athletic performance. NBA betting pros understand that no team can be “up” for every game, that fatigue can become a significant factor, and pointspreads often grow in proportion to the length of a road trip.

It’s also worth noting that it’s more difficult on the body to travel against the sun, or west to east, than it is to go east to west. So, NBA teams based in the Western and Rocky Mountain Time Zones often are disadvantaged more by long road trips than are teams in the Eastern and Central Time Zones. One way they overcome this handicap is by flying all the way east to start the road trip then work their way back west.

Oddsmakers and NBA betting experts not only consider the journey of the road team but also note whether the home team has been stationed in familiar confines for a period of time or is itself just returning from a lengthy trip.

Often overlooked by the casual player, savvy bettors understand that it’s always important to check the schedule.

Interestingly, despite playing 82 home games to gain one extra postseason home date in a series, the home court means less in the playoffs than it does during the regular season. Generally, that’s because teams in a post-season series have similar travel itineraries. For example, if San Antonio and Sacramento are set to square off in a best-of-seven series beginning in Texas, once the Kings visit the Spurs for the initial two games in the series, the teams will have similar travel schedules, flying to Northern California within hours of each other. That also will be the case if a return flight to San Antonio is needed to finish the series. The sameness of travel mitigates the home court advantage.

Yes, talent counts in NBA betting, but cagey bettors also understand that it’s important to check those schedules before placing a wager.

Your ‘No’ Could Mean ‘Yes’ To A Trojan

Similar to viruses, Trojans copy, distribute and kill your data. Obviously since you would never permit these actions, Trojans do not bother to ask for your permission.

Trojans are deceptive programs which don’t take no for an answer. Any keystroke means yes to them. They are mainly designed to steal your data from your pc. But if you have antispyware guarding your pc, you need not worry.

What Are Trojans?

Basically Trojans appear quite harmless. They quietly enter your computer, either as email attachments or bundled in with other software programs. They are a kind of spyware. Spyware works by keeping track of what you do when you browse the web without you being aware of it. It is quite irritating and can cause major problems if you don’t use any antispyware program to keep your pc clean.

Trojans are one of the worst kinds of spyware that eventually destroy your data after stealing it. There are some Trojans called remote administration tools, which permit access to your computer every time you log in - and you won’t even know it. Whoever accesses your pc can easily pick up files from your system, remove or add programs, and even control your keystrokes.

How Trojans Land Into Your PC

Similar to viruses, Trojans copy, distribute and kill your data. Obviously since you would never permit these actions, Trojans do not bother to ask for your permission. The spyware installer does not care about the means used to rob your data. It is well known that there are many Internet marketers who trick you into installing certain software bundled in with Trojan spyware into your computer. They use a pop up ad to attract you, and then as if you want to install it. Whether you say yes or no is irrelevant. Even if you say no, they follow up with another pop up ad to ask if you are really sure. In spite of clicking no, your keystroke simply sets off a download into your computer without your being aware of it.

Drive by downloads are a common method for Trojan spyware to sneak in to your pc. Here is what happens - you browse a website and see a popup asking if you want to download something and the way it asks you, you sometimes end up saying yes, thinking that you need to download it to look at the web page. So when you say yes, it looks like you are allowing the download. If you say no, you are hounded by pop ups that wait for you to just click to start off the download, making it happen without your knowledge.

Everyday there are new ways being devised by spyware installers to get into your system. Get antispyware software to control this and keep your pc free of spies!

Becoming an Expert

One of the most coveted roles in our society is that of an expert. Experts are not just average people. They command respect, and get it. People hang on their every word, and make them their go-to source for information. Often, experts can create wonderful new income streams, because their information is that valuable.

Let’s face it. If we want to solve a problem, we look for an expert. If we want advice, we seek out an expert. And if we want to stay on track during a particularly arduous process … yep, same person … the expert.

More than ever before, people want to be perceived as experts. They understand that there is a willing audience for their work, and all they have to do is package and sell that information to as wide a market as possible. But there’s a lot more to being an expert than just calling yourself one.

The word expert derives from the Latin expertus, meaning, “to try.” As this word passed from Old French to Middle English, it was often used as a noun, to mean “a person with great skill or knowledge of a certain subject,” or an adjective, to mean “demonstrating great skill or knowledge of a certain subject.” That’s also how it survives in our present-day understanding of the word.

What’s interesting about this mini-lesson in etymology is that, at our cores, we are all experts. We all “try” various fields, until we find the one that make us happiest, or the one for which we show the greatest aptitude. When we find something we’re good at, we start to glow. Nothing seems outside our reach. The task seems to take shape all by itself. Athletes, performers and other creative people often describe their amazing feats as being done with very little conscious effort. The classical composer Beethoven even said, “I have never thought of writing for reputation and honor. What I have in my heart must come out; that is the reason why I compose.”

Because of this, calling ourselves experts rarely works. We are free do this all we want, but only when others trust us enough to come to us for information that can help solve their most intimate problems has this really taken shape in the world. So becoming an expert starts with some serious internal work.

What are you good at? How do you assert your authority? What have you mastered? In which field do you show the greatest proficiency?

After all, we all may want to be muscle-studded athletes or gorgeous supermodels, but is that what we’re really good at? Is our greatest proficiency throwing a football or striding confidently down a catwalk? Probably not.

Instead, we all have skills we’re aware of, or which may be lying dormant inside us. The trick is to tease out your inherent expertise, without crushing your creativity in the process. Because becoming an expert demands that we unleash the creative side of our brains.

This may seem counter-intuitive to some, because most of us are taught that creativity is analogous to finger-painting-all over the page, without rhyme or reason. Business and making money are the purview of the left brain, which strives to create order amidst chaos.

But if you’re a true entrepreneur, using guerilla marketing tactics, you’re probably a little of both. You have a drive to create something that caters to your unique set of skills, and betters the overall quality of life. But you also have the desire, along with the methodology, to generate some serious income.

By establishing yourself as an expert in a particular area, you get to serve both needs. Your creative, or right brain, side is fed by constructing books, workshops and products that solve common societal problems. Your rational, or left brain, side gets to see your finances improve as your books, workshops and products help others to live richer and more rewarding lives.

Of course, the first step to becoming an expert is to give yourself permission to be an expert, not just call yourself one. We may feel that we know a particular subject matter fairly well, or that we’ve had a certain amount of experience with it. But how do we know when we’ve become experts? Is there a line we suddenly cross? Does a bolt of lightning descend from the sky?

Not by a long shot. We know we have achieved expert status when we can honestly say that we have more familiarity with a particular subject matter than most people. There will always be someone that knows more than we do. There will always be someone smarter. But there is only one you, with your ideas and your unique and creative ability to help others.

The psychologist Erich Fromm said, “Creativity requires the courage to let go of certainties.” This is definitely true for entrepreneurs and guerilla marketers. We do not know how a particular book, workshop or product will turn out, or if it will be widely accepted by our intended audience. What we do know is that we have a burning desire to exercise our creativity, and that that need, to let go of our certainties and take the leap, is more important, and more life-affirming, than anything else.

Experts know this feeling intimately, and that’s why we instinctively trust them-because they have gone, quite willingly, where few would dare to tread.

A Few ADHD Treatment Options Before Jumping To Medication

There are several alternative treatment options available to the parents of children correctly diagnosed with ADHD or ADD. Attention Deficit Disorder or that with Hyperactive tendencies are a set of mental illnesses that are routinely mis diagnosed.

This is due to the fact that many of the symptoms of ADHD and ADD are considered by many normal characteristics in growing kids. The challenge to develop any treatment options therefore is to accurately determine the degree of hyperactivity that pushes someone over the edge of normalcy and into the realm of a mental disorder.

One thing that you should be aware of is that the medical community is not in full agreement about ADHD in general or the use of some treatment options. There are those that believe that mediation used to treat this disorder have unacceptable risks. Another important factoid is that the treatment of all but the most pronounced mental disorders and diseases is a relatively new frontier.

Not in the sense of age as we’ve been working to find treatment options for all mental disorders for decades. But it’s more a frontier in the sense of understanding the causation and our ability to measure the severity of the problem. This is why jumping to an aggressive treatment option may not be in the best interest of the child that’s been diagnosed with ADHD or the family involved

If you have a child who has attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, or ADHD for short, there are another of options open for treatment. The most common ADHD treatments usually involve as their biggest part the use of drugs like Ritalin or Dexedrine. On the street, these are known as Speed or methanphetamines.

Other treatment options for ADHD involve therapy and counseling for not only the one identified as having the ADD problem but also the whole family and especially the parents. Counseling can be used to help better identify emotional disturbances, and can assist with teaching the kid some study skills and organizational skills.

Note that teaching study skills etc. is normal stuff that should be done by parents. For many children however, because of the lack of parenting skills, the kid is diagnosed as having the problem.

The problem is that many ADHD treatments address the physiological part of the condition and ignore every other part. This is a problem, because ADHD children have trouble forming strategies to organize their lives and so they need, in addition to the drugs, some coaching in study skills that other students may be able to learn on their own. It is not enough just to medicate as an ADHD treatment option alone.

There are a number of other options that should also be considered. The most popular one at the moment is to have your child tested for allergies. Food allergies have been known to cause many problems for growing children and could be a root cause of ADHD as well.

Another option is to explore the use of natural remedies. vitamins and minerals may help keep your child off the pharmaceutical industries profitable drugs. Understand if needed, fine, but so many times, there are alternative options that work without the use of expensive drug solutions.

Other people recommend meditation techniques as ADHD treatment options. They say that the best way to treat ADHD is to take advantage of the mind’s natural flexibility and to rework the way it runs through self programming. Through daily meditation, focus, relaxation, and an end to the anxiety that is so common with ADHD sufferers.

Auctions: A Closer Look

You’ve read about them, you’ve heard about them, you’ve probably participated in one. But what exactly are auctions? Isn’t it just the simple method of selling an object to interested people who bid until the highest bidder gets it?

That is definitely the scenario in most auctions. But auctions are actually more complex than people realize. Do you know that not all auctions have ascending price schemes? While the ascending bid is the most popular auction format, other formats exist such as the descending, simultaneous and handshake forms of bidding.

An auction, in general terms, is the method of allocating scarce goods. It is a unique selling method that is based on competition. Truly, the objectives are simple: the seller wants to obtain the most money for his item while the buyers want to purchase it at their own desired prices. Everything can be sold in auctions - from singular items like paintings to multiple units of a homogenous item such as treasury securities. Auctions are most useful when a seller is unsure of the price his item can get, or when selling a commodity with undeterminable quality.

Some unique things about auctions: the price of an item is set by the bidders and not by the seller. Also, the auctioneer doesn’t own the goods but rather acts as an agent for the real owner. Lastly, buyers often know the value of an item more than the seller.

Various classifications of auctions exist. There are open auctions and sealed-bid auctions. There are auctions wherein the price simple ascends and there are auctions where the price drops at regular intervals. Experts agree, however, that there are four major one-sided auction formats: English, Dutch, First-Price sealed-bid, and Vickrey (uniform second-price).

You may ask which type of auction is the best. It actually depends on the perspective of both the seller and the buyer. Some auction types lessen room for cheating while others seem to actually encourage such. Some auctions require the presence of the buyer while some do not. Before an auction is set, the seller must first analyze the auction format that would best benefit him. An aspect of auctioning that is sometimes very vital is speed. If the item you are selling perishes quickly, like flowers or fish, of course a quick auction is required.

While it has its’ advantages, an auction also has drawbacks, like the so-called “winner’s curse”. This is the phenomenon when a “lucky” winner pays more for an item than it is worth. These winners realize that their valuation of an object is higher than that of anyone else.

In this age of modern technology, auctions have found a place where it can thrive and reach more prospective buyers: the Internet. Online auctions are becoming more popular each day as buyers can browse through the products and bid at their own time and pace. Furthermore, the range of products people auction online is endless and intriguing - you could spend hours just browsing.

All in all, auctions are a pure marketplace at work in its finest form. So if you’re planning to sell something, you might consider auctioning it. Just look at it from this perspective: your clutter is other people’s treasure. And they’re going to compete to get it.

UEFA Champions League Group A - Chelsea 2:0 Werder Bremen

Jose Mourinho these days is a man under pressure.

Following two fruitless years in Europe the Chelsea boss knows it is the Champions League that club owner Roman Abramovich craves the most.

Failure to deliver in this year’s competition could prove fatal for the ‘Special One’.

The start of this season has seen a somewhat more humble Mourinho, gone for the moment the brash arrogance that has accompanied the man ever since his arrival fresh from guiding Porto to Champions League glory.

Watching him interviewed in recent weeks I get the impression that his failure to dominate Europe despite the biggest budget in world football has brought the Portugeezer back down to earth a little.

Maybe the realisation has dawned upon him that he is not quite as good as he thinks he is and that he is only human after all.

The game itself was a cagey affair, exploding into life when Michael Essien pounced on a German defensive error and stroked the ball past the goalkeeper and into the net.

Werder Bremen had their moments, the nearest being Klose’s header that beat Petr Cech but cannoned back off the crossbar.

The game was made safe with twenty minutes remaining after Didier Drogba was bundled over in the penalty area.

Normal spot-kick man Frank Lampard stepped aside, instead handing the ball to German midfield maestro Michael Ballack who duly proceeded to smash the ball into the net.

The power and accuracy of the German’s finish suggested Lampard may well have handed over the spot-kick duties for good.

Lampard hit a great shot with just ten minutes remaining but was unfortunate to see his effort crash back off the inside of the post.

Despite a low par performance Chelsea will be grateful for the three points which puts them level at the top of the group with last year’s champions Barcelona.

How-to spead-up your PC workings with reg cleaners

If you’ve had crashes on your personal computer, error messages or other set backs of your PC systems, you could need your computer reg. cleaned. What happening is that the Windows registry in your PC acts as a central information base, with information classified according to many data and / or criteria in successive layers or levels. Windows uses this filed data to set up the system for not only users but software applications and hardware issues.

If you ever experience slow times on your computer, error messages or other malfunctioning of your systems, you could need your registry cleaned. What happens is that the Windows registry in your computer acts as a central database, with information classified according to various data and / or criteria in successive layers or levels. And Windows uses this stored data to configure your system for not only users but software applications and hardware devices.

In short, your registry maintains necessary information needed during operations; it accesses your user profiles, your software applications, your documents and folders, your shortcut icons, your hardware and ports, etc. If corrupted, this registry can slow down your system, disrupt certain applications, cause error messages and much more. So you need to take charge and clean it regularly.

Corruptions can be caused by incomplete removal of software or other applications that sometimes leave unwanted data around. Files can be corrupted due to technically glitches and any number of reasons.

How Cleaners Help

What registry cleaners can do is scan your registry for blocked paths, paths that no longer exist (like with removed software that left traces on your system), and repairing erroneous information stored there. Results are that your system can operate and run much faster and smoother. Forget failed start ups, frozen screens, error messages, long time start up operations and incomplete hook ups with files and application processes.

Registry cleaners also offer additional applications for your computer systems. They feature tools that clean up your start up menu, pulling items you rarely use or even need from your start up menu. This in itself can aped up your start up and restart timing and make the processes much more efficient.

Plus an organizer tool within the registry cleaner allows you to go into Windows and Internet Explorer (IE) to control certain functions in those areas, too, just like with the start up menu cleaning process.

Key Features

A registry cleaner usually features these basic utilities:

1. Registry scan and clean up with the click of a button

2. Backup and restore abilities

3. Defrag and Compact tools for the registry

4. Erases tracking to protect your privacy

5. Organizes startup

6. Organizes Windows and IE

7. Improves speed and efficiency of systems

To find cleaners that help your computer systems, simply search “Registry Cleaner” in your favorite search engine. Over 5 million listings show up on Google? alone.

When seeking registry cleaners that enhance your PC system, just search “Registry Cleaner” in your search engine of choice. Well over five million listings show-up on Google™ alone.

World Chess Championship Literally Goes Down The Toilet

Sometimes the cartoon world, at least as reflected in the colorful pictures and captions of mass media, gets so bonkers that a real-world headline would be right at home in a humor magazine. Take the ludicrous bauble that prompted this article. It appeared in no less a distinguished place than the front page of The New York Times on the Web: Bathroom Dispute Halts Chess Championship.

We could have gone with that. No doubt about it.

But we prefer to see the everyday zaniness through our own eyes, so we did a bit of a redo.

If case you missed the debacle, the world chess championship was halted when a player, Russia’s Vladimir Kramnik, was locked out of his private bathroom because of inferences that he was going there too often and cheating while there. Expectedly enough, the bathrooms were part of the private areas of both players that were not under video surveillance.

In a rage over what he perceived as an insult to his personal dignity, Kramnik forfeited the fifth game of the match.

The day before, his opponent’s team had filed a written protest to the World Chess Federation on behalf of Bulgaria’s Veselin Topalov about Kramnik’s frequent bathroom breaks.

The Federation responded by locking the private bathrooms of both players and informing them they should use the same bathroom for the remainder of the match.

Going on strike at the start of the next game, Mr. Kramnik left for his private area and took a seat outside of his privy, demanding it be unlocked. When the organizers refused, he did not resume his participation, and the game was forfeited to Topalov. He was ahead in the match 3-1, with 6.5 points needed to win.

Demanding that his bathroom be reopened, Kramnik said, My dignity does not allow me to stand this situation.

Mr. Kramnik’s manager fired off a letter demanding that the committee be replaced and the decision to lock the players out of their private bathrooms be reversed. He declared that his client’s frequent trips to the bathroom were due to the fact that he drinks a lot of water during the games and likes to pace. Since the private rest area is too small for his perambulations, he also uses the space of the bathroom as well.

The letter said that Mr. Kramnik would not continue unless the federation was ready to respect Mr. Kramnik’s rights, in this case, to use the toilet of his own restroom whenever he wishes to do so.

Meanwhile, Topalov’s manager shot off his own missive, maintaining that the players should be accompanied to the bathroom by a match referee, since the new ruling would permit Kramnik to visit the new bathroom an unlimited number of times without being subject to further control. He added that if the match goes on, his client would refrain from shaking hands with Mr. Kramnik before the games and would not take part in joint press-conferences with him.

Play, we assume, eventually resumed. But, as far as the prestige of the match goes, the handle had already been pressed.

Gym Love

The place is hot and steamy, pulsing with the beat of blaring music and gyrating bodies. You see her working it across the crowded floor, and you have to meet her. A brilliant idea: you’ll buy her a drink. But wait a second - that only works in night clubs, and you’re at a health club. So while you could send a 20 oz. Tropical Xtremo Gatorade her way, that probably won’t produce the intended result, no matter how important it is to replenish fluids during strenuous exercise. What do you do?

Gyms notoriously attract eye-catching people. There’s no greater concentration of sinewy muscles and tight, skimpy clothing anywhere… except maybe the adult thriller section of your local Blockbuster Video. Let’s face it, even the most average-looking gym-goer is fit and healthy, or at least will be in a few months. But while fitness clubs are a veritable bakery of available beefcakes and beefcakettes, they can actually be rather tricky places to meet people. Gyms are often chock full of cheesy pick-up artists with sleazy come-ons, or, on the other side, designer gear-wearing posers who walk around a whole lot and manage to lift very little.

But there has to be some way for normal people to meet other normal people at the gym, right? The simple answer is yes, but not without keeping several things in mind - especially if your idea of a good opening line is something like “Nice shoes, wanna french?”

Listen up, all you muscle-bound Casanovas out there: no matter how eager you are to begin the mating… er, dating process, you’ve got to scope out the scene. Some gyms are as flirty as all-you-can drink “body shot nite” at Club Med. Others, well, you’d probably have better luck cruising a Buddhist monastery. Look around. Are people talking… with each other… and not asking whether they can “work-in”? If that’s the case, fire up conversations at will (we’ll cover what to say shortly). But if the atmosphere is more businesslike, it’s probably best to keep minding your own. Unsolicited banter, no matter how witty, can stick out worse than a left elbow during assisted tricep dips.

Next, and most importantly: you can check someone out, just don’t freak them out. It’s one thing to sneak a peek while she’s sprawled on the stretching mat, but quite another to train your penetrating gaze on her (no matter how amazing her side crunch technique might be). Among the women I’ve spoken to, the consensus is clear. One or two quick glances, and maybe even a little smile, are flattering; prolonged staring, drooling, or high-fiving your equally lecherous friends, is not. Of course, even the strongest exhibit occasional weakness - if you absolutely can’t help it, use the gym’s mirrors for a far less detectable stare. (This technique can also give you a better view of, shall we say, the traditionally hidden parts of an alluring physique.)

You’ve spotted someone on the lat machine, you’ve used the mirror, and you like what you see. You’re ready to make your move, right? Hold on there, tough guy. The next step is recognizing her receptiveness. Just as exercise is a social experience, it can also be solitary and serious. Some people just want to get in and get out as quickly as possible. This is especially true at gyms where members squeeze workouts into hectic appointment schedules, or even before the workday begins. People probably aren’t looking for romance in the midst of the daily grind, and while your hormones might be awake at 6:00 a.m., it’s unlikely that someone who gets up while it’s still dark wants to meet anyone, aside from the coffee stand guy.

Same can be said of those who hit the gym after work - chances are they just want to exercise, go home, and eat a salad. If some meathead wearing zebra-print Zubaz pants impedes that progress, do you think he’ll get that number (the real one)? She might have caught your eye, but you can’t assume the feeling is mutual unless she sees you and smiles back. Even then, wait an extra minute, just to make sure she’s not there with her championship kick-boxer boyfriend, who’d be more than happy to use your face as a leather focus mitt.

When it comes to opening lines, we all have our stand-bys. But at the gym, inspired pick-ups like “Sagittarius, right?,” “I’m on the football team,” and “please don’t call the cops” might not work as well. True, women’s reactions vary, depending largely on delivery, making it tough to say what to say. But there are definitely techniques to avoid. Worst offender? The old “let me show you how to do that” maneuver. We’ve all seen this move in action, and might even be guilty of trying it (listen up, personal trainers). There’s nothing wrong with correcting someone’s form - unless it’s used as a pretext to ogle her body at close range, or, worse, place an “instructive” hand on it.

Most men don’t mind a stranger’s touch (and probably fantasize about it), but women like it about as much as filthy bathrooms, back hair, and spitting contests. Here’s something else they hate: guys who comment on how stretchy they are. Yes, women are flexible, and flexibility is awesome - just ask Emoke Ritter, world-famous Hungarian contortionist (you’ve never heard of her?). Women understand they can bend in ways that stir the male imagination - spare yourself the embarrassment of mentioning it.

The last thing a woman wants to hear from a stranger, unless you’re Leonardo DiCaprio, is “boy are you flexible.” Same goes for “great muscle tone,” “killer pecs,” or “nice ass.” Keep the focus off her body, at least out loud. Instead, comment on the book she’s reading or the music she’s listening to. Or simply ask what her name is. Talk a little. Work out a little. Established a rapport first, then you can show her the right way to do a shoulder press. Better yet, let her show you.
